If your children are not well behaved please do not subject the rest of us to their whining and fussing on a 2 hour plane ride. If you can't afford to drive I would say take Amtrak which has more room for movement then a cramped plane seat which kids seem to want to kick the back of and put the tray up and down really irritating the person in the front. From this time of year until the end of Aug prices are high because it is vacation time but sometime you can find a deal. Also you will find your best deals early in the morning midweek. By early I mean getting on line before 6 or 6:30am

The cheapest way to travel is by bus, so I would take one of those, if not an amtrak is the second cheapest way to go, go to orbitz for a hotel, you can find them cheap.
Find a really good bus company in or near your area, or just do greyhound.

Starting at the end of May, there is going to be super cheap airfare like $10-20 roundtrip from Columbus, OH to Greensboro, NC on skybus.com. For that price, you could rent a car in Greensboro and drive to the outerbanks (another 3 hr. trip). Or I think skybus has service to Richmond, VA and you could drive from there if you want to go the Northern part of the Outer Banks. Hope this helps.
And even if your kids aren't well behaved as the other person said, bring them on the plane anyway (people can get over it; it's public transportation); it's better for you than having whining on a long road or train trip....lol.

There are no close passenger airports to the OBX, and no trains on the Outer Banks either. Not to mention, once you get here, the only way to get around will be by taxi (which doesn't even exist on the Southern Outer Banks).
I'd strongly recommend just renting a car in Ohio and driving down to the Outer Banks. Overall, that *will* be your cheapest method when you factor in time spent waiting on taxis, costs of taxis plus cost of whatever other method you use to get here.
